Hippotherapy
What is hippotherapy and how does it work?
Hippotherapy is a physiotherapy treatment tool delivered by trained physiotherapists, using the movement of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input. As the client sits on the horse, its motion closely mimics the movement of the human pelvis during walking, requiring the rider to actively engage their muscles to maintain balance. This strengthens neural pathways to enhance postural control, balance, strength, muscle tone, and sensory processing—supporting overall balance and body awareness. The horse's gait provides 95 to 110 repetitive movements per minute, offering high-repetition, rhythmic input that can be varied in speed, direction, and intensity.
Who is it for?
Hippotherapy can benefit both children and adults working toward goals such as improving ambulation, postural control, balance, righting reactions, strength, upper limb function, and gross motor skills. It also supports functional outcomes related to daily activities and falls prevention.
Suitable for diagnosis including but not limited to:
Cerebral palsy
Stroke
Spinal cord injury
Spina bifida
Global developmental delay
Ataxia
Please note, hippotherapy is a treatment tool used by physiotherapists, it is a form of physiotherapy intervention. Hippotherapy is not therapeutic riding or horse riding.

In conjunction with our partners at Arena Therapy, physiotherapist Lily Harris uses hippotherapy as a treatment technique for both adults and children to help achieve their mobility goals, with the support of our RDA Oakford team. Potential clients must be aware that physiotherapy related goals are required to participate in this program. Your NDIS capacity building funding can be utilised to access this service.
